Hate Speech

So, I didn't know this was a controversial subject, but what's your opinion on hate speech, and whether it's the same as free speech or not.

Was brought up in a heated discussion in-class. Wondering what your opinions are.

Edit: also figured this was the most apt. section being it's not political neither a world or life news, so yea that

I'm a big free speech guy and i think hate speech should'it be a thing. I do think incitement of violence should still be a thing and also that one where u cant yell fire for no reason in a crowded place where ppl could be trampled or hurt.

We have the right to free speech. And I plan on keeping that right. But hate speech is a no go. There is no need for it.

But the problem is, is that many people consider some offensive language as hate speech. When really it's either a joke or someone's opinion.

I don't think it should, because really it can't be enforced. Like unless there are officers everywhere listening. They can't enforce a hate speech law.

My view of it is, you should always be allowed to have different opinions, and you should always be allowed to voice those opinions, even if they're opinions about specific people. While it's a bit of a dick move to call somebody out about, say, their looks, I think I should still be allowed to criticize people, places, groups, etc. Even those same touchy subjects such as peoples' looks, fashion, etc., should be allowed to be talked about.

However, I don't think people necessarily need to be assholes about it either. As opposed to say, calling someone a "fucking retard" or something like calling somebody a "dirty [insert racial slur of choice here]", you can still voice your opinions without being an ass about it. "I don't agree with your opinion about [blah]." I doubt people will stop insulting each other though. It's hard not to insult when things start getting heated. But, people should at least have some self control.

Whether there should be any punishments for hate speech or other distasteful speech, I think there already are. Companies are known for firing people for tweets, posts, etc. that are seen in bad taste. People have been publicly called out and ridiculed for that sort of stuff, and friendships have ended over it. Whether that's enough or too much, I don't know.... On the other hand, it's not unheard of for people to be fired for having a different opinion, or to have people ridicule them for it. I will say that it does look bad when somebody's career or the rest of their life gets jeopardized over one message/tweet/post, and that has been known to happen too.
