I did re-read the OP, but it’s fair to assume that Smiley knows that you need to pay for internet connection at her own home to get WiFi.

I assume you actually have internet and a modem and now just looking for the WiFi portion of that then yes a router is what you can use.
As for what router I'm not too good at knowing what's good for range and connection but if you have Amazon Prime I've used a version of this for about 10 years now. (prime owners it says $34.99)
Otherwise I hear Netgear is good for routers.
For setup this should help or here's a video

I should add that a router can hinder download speeds such as that linksys (54 MB per second) one so if you're planning to use wifi for your desktop you may want a better router that can match what your speeds are.
If you are plugged into your modem with your desktop then the router won't matter. It'll only matter for devices using that WiFi.
This is another router that looks good for how much it is it goes up to 450 MB per second and is cheaper. (though is missing some features that other routers will have)
Or if you're willing to go a bit more than $40 (as long as you have prime) the AC1200 is just an upgraded version of the one I just linked.
I'll also edit this if I may find any other routers.

The only way to set up a router legally off of a school set up is to get into their MDF closet, find the switch and either A run a long ass Ethernet cable from their switch into a modem, then use your router from that (unlikely they will let you do that lol) or B try and get one of those "wifi" booster usb's they work somewhat, enough to play CSS in most cases, browse the web bla bla. They usually run 25-100$

What we sometimes do where i work is installing a 4G/LTE router and have the internet run off that. No restriction from school or anyone else.
But if you have a cable and just want wifi you can get a cheap router and it should be good, i have this one at home with about 6-9 devices connected, you do need a network cable for it though :)

We have alot of tech support here so you can always ask for help installing this all!
