Hey so I need to get my own WiFi “channel “. Guys I’m really dumb in this department because school would rather focus on me learning trigonometry. I just need to get WiFi, I think all I have to do is buy a router and set it up but I need some ideas on what routers that are cheap and work really good. Preferably under 40$ and off Amazon? Idk what else I need so if you could help me out with whatever else I need that would be great. Anyways thanks :)

i know nothing about routers / wi-fi, whichever, but would you not still have to pay a monthly pay to even have access to wi-fi?

Maybe it's just internet access that costs monthly

Setting up a wifi router in your dorm, in most colleges, is prohibited for security reasons. You should probably check out your school’s written policy.

If you want me to tell you how to do it anyway, and get away with it, hit me on Steam. I did it at my old school.

Not worth trying to get away with it having the chance of being caught; sure, you got away with it, but who’s to say she will? Colleges work smart these days with stuff in their internet connections, they keep a close eye on who and what is connected to the internet, if it’s a phone, laptop, network switch you name it, so in my opinion, I wouldn’t go for the ‘against college policy’ and just hope for the best they allow it.

However, if you want internet in your dorm, you’d require an ISP (internet service provider), once you’ve found one that is good for you as it’s package and price, you sure then can order such internet package and have them install the router in your dorm (you could potentially get charged a setup fee) and then that should be it. I apologise for not putting in a deal rights for you as I don’t know how your college works as I do not live whatever country you do, and which colleges, here in the U.K., work a different way but all are essentially very similar but also plenty of differences.

I hope you do be able to get internet access in your dorm! And I hope that I somewhat helped you.

If I am not mistaken I believe she was referring to how her school taught her trig instead of something "useful" like setting up a router, not about setting one up in a dorm.

But like Central said you will need to pay an ISP to set it up and provide you service, so the $40 cheap Amazon idea probably won't work.

Most schools will let you register an ethernet device. You can provide them a MAC address of something that you would use, like a PS3 or something, and then spoof the MAC address of the router (as well as other things to fly under the radar of IT such as a router-wide VPN).. You don’t need your own ISP.

I assume you actually have internet and a modem and now just looking for the WiFi portion of that then yes a router is what you can use.
As for what router I'm not too good at knowing what's good for range and connection but if you have Amazon Prime I've used a version of this for about 10 years now. (prime owners it says $34.99)
Otherwise I hear Netgear is good for routers.
