We're not, and considering everyone equal would be a mistake. But we all should get the same chances (which we don't atm). We still live in a society with a lot of inequality, but it's better than it's probably ever been, everyone truly has a chance to be whatever they want to be, some just have better chances than others.
But focusing race/gender as the major sources of current day inequality is just wrong. Capitalism counters this.
