My fear with giving machines AI and independent thought is something akin to the cylons in the reminagined battle star galáctica series or heck like the terminators. That somehow they find humanity lacking and begin to take us out.
As a species I don't think we could handle the responsibility of teaching a new race how to live. Either they find us unworthy as creators or we abuse and misuse them to where they rebel.
You read too much sci-fi. If properly managed, AI can be a great tool. The thing is, it's happening, whether you want it to or not, so we might as well strive to make sure it's as contained as possible.
