A government voted up by people is waiting for their chance to lunge at the people and kill them off?
The government isn't going to get the military to massacre everyone on the streets.
I think your radicalising the government
I don't think you understand how totalitarian governments form. In order for a government to become tyrannical, citizens have to have zero power. If you take away all guns from a country, citizens will have zero power. The American government is not all voted in as you would like to believe, there are several agencies and bureaucracies that have nothing to do with any democratic processes. I think it is a very bad mistake to put such blind faith into these institutions that are completely unaffected by the public opinion.
The founding fathers put the 2nd Amendment in the Bill of Rights SPECIFICALLY so that the government would never become tyrannical. There's a reason that all citizens are given the right to form militias.
It's not for citizens to form militias but the States and also that's the the purpose of the second amendment. It was meant to ensure government wasn't centralized at all. You are also wrong in that gun rights someohow are the only protections for democracy. Incorrect. There's checks and balances, three branches of government, and most important people have the right to vote.
You are also wrong in that a fundamental right cannot be regulated. If that were the case then there wouldn't be these BS voter ID laws. It's not that government is going to take away your guns, it's that they can and should be able to have tougher ID laws/procedures and stop exceptions to them, as well as making a national registry for all guns that are produced.
