Kinda like what Terminator said.
How we can change the system: We should change the system by using the voting like the recruits.
Who gets to vote:Unfortunately I think that staff and higher ups should be able to vote only. I think that if the community had the ability to vote on someone, it would be based on what we say about popularity and not really about the things they did to help the community.
So what will change?:I think what will change is that we should have the staff give some input about the person on the vote list. I also think that staff should exclude people from the list if they have broken multiple forum or game rules that they possibly have been banned for. Once they are out of the list, they can only be put back on the next list. I think that if we have this list we would be able to see the amount of votes given yes and amount of votes given no, we would also be able to see some feedback which would be very great.
What staff can use:
Why does this person deserve a promotion?: <Talk about why he deserves a promotion and things he has done that helped improve the community during those months with some evidence.>
Why he doesn't deserve a promotion?:<Talk about why he doesn't deserve a promotion and things he has done that disrupted the community.>
SIDE NOTE: I do want to say that this might be even more work for staff but I think that with this system people will look at others and see what people did wrong and why they didnt get promoted and also view the people that did get promoted and what they did and use that to help improve the community so that they can also get promoted in the future.

I think the focus should be more on staff letting people know about things they can do to help out the community. Specific activities or thresholds for promotion will have a cap, unless someone has to continue doing those things to maintain rank, and I don't think that's very conducive to the atmosphere of the community. As many others have said, and from personal experience, as long as you are actively helping out, you will get noticed and promoted

you goobers need to quit bitching about how things are done, as much as you want it to change, its better off that it doesn't for fear of a whole new collapse. just deal with it as is and for fucking fuck stop bitching about not being promoted, there's obviously a reason why, and the more you have a temper tantrum about it the more staff overlook you for next months promotions.

Promotions are done as they are because:
1. Voting for promotions would make it purely popularity, with groups voting in their picks based on how liked they are and NOT how much effort and time that person has put in. Meaning that promotions become pointless as the ranks have nothing to do with anything but how well you can kiss the ass of whichever group. Staff+ is already accused of doing this, but imagine when every single person gets to have a say on how well they like you. Prepare for fights about respect and reasons for demotion or promotion.
2. Staff+ are expected to have a better angle on the community than all of you; this translates into them having their own opinions on people. This is important as I can't see how each member acts in the servers, most of the time I'm reading BR's or dealing with Drama.
3. Having "Promotion dates" like the military is stupid, they do those because it increases pay and benefits and those are the incentives for a lot of people. As in what everyone else has been saying in this thread, the ranks would mean even less and once you've hit the ceiling of ranks(You ain't getting leader) then what?
4. The Ceiling exists and is present here, at a certain point once you reach Advisor...then it's up to either Bourne or myself leaving. Wouldn't that be fun? A bunch of Advisors sitting around waiting for someone to either die or drop out the clan.
5. Rank not earned is the rank that isn't going to get respect, and while I can promote some of you, I can't make people respect you or care about your achievements. And no offense to all of you, I want to be able to congratulate the person who earns their promotion, I don't want just to make it routine and boring.
6. Your words and opinions do get heard, and if a Staff+ doesn't like how you think or act then it is their choice to either include you for promotion or not. How else are they supposed to judge you? You are judged here by what you say and do, that seems the fairest as I'd rather not judge you on some scoring system.
7. I always ask that Staff+ make their lists, and give their unique reason for someone being promoted. Sometimes we spend extra time on certain people, debating their value versus their flaws. That's part of leading people, knowing them and understanding them.
8. How about we do demotions on a vote? I bet some of you wouldn't be here purely because enough people don't like you, and not because you did anything wrong.
9. Last but certainly not the least....The surprise of getting promoted, which if you ask those who got promoted...I doubt they will complain about the surprise.
Want some tips for getting promoted? 1. Don't fucking break the fucking rules. 2. Don't be rude to people. 3. Be on TS; it's where the heart of the clan resides. Be active on the forums posting and being helpful or beneficial to others, your in a community so meet people and make friends. 4. Be supportive of the upper ranks, help them perform their jobs as they tend to have a lot of them. Burn outs happen, Staff+ isn't a reward it's a job, and I make it a serious thing. 5. Remember that donations aren't just money, the time and effort you put into EgN are a donation as well. Expecting something for it like rank makes it less a donation and more a bribe, just be humble and be magnanimous. Look up "magnanimous" and read the definition, because you'll be able to spot the mature person by how magnanimous they are even in defeat or victory. 6. Good "Sportsmanship" or Good "Membership," both of those amount to the same thing and will get you noticed; for either a lack of it or an abundance.
Or....

Getting promoted is fairly simple, yet seems hard for many. As long as you are active, mature, and helpful, you'll succeed in this community. Asking for a promotion just reverses the process.
I FUCKING LOVE THIS VERSION OF GANGSTA PARADISE! OMFG! I remember watching Dangerous Minds just because of Coolio, I use to listen to GP over and over and over trying to get the right pitch and shit like Coolio when I was singing it. Fuck I miss being young and naive, you never realize how important naivety is until you lose it.

I wasn't bitching more of giving a solution like Terminator mentioned because I want to CONTRIBUTE to this topic. No offense to EgN, but this ranking is just something I wouldn't take seriously. After all, we are here to have fun and help each other. But what I do care is what each person has shown and is noticed about what he has contributed to this community so that he and others can be proud of him/himself and have the ability for others and himself to strive for more goals to achieve in the community and no because of some darker shade of blue. I think people need to start achieving their goals for the love of the community and not for the rank that they want to receive. I hope I made sense cus I wrote this at 2:50 AM lol.
I think what hes trying to say is basically it's easier to make sure a small group of staff is promoting for the right reasons rather than a whole community.
By the way --- the way EgN promotes is the same way 90%+ of ever major corporation promotes.
It boils down to: 1) be good and demonstrate that you are performing at the next level and 2) be visisbile to the community (and staff)
Pretty much this in a nutshell. For those of you old enough to work in a corporation, this is how it works. You can view others as "kissing ass" with the higher-ups, but how else are they going to get noticed unless they actually show their face and talk? Any interaction with a higher-up is deemed negative by others, which shouldn't be the case. I'd also like to add that anyone can bring up a name to the higher-ups for promotion. It's as easy as saying "so and so is doing a great job in JB".
As someone who was an Advisor for however many years, this system of promotion has worked as long as the higher-ups have a cadence of reviewing people. People tend to complain because they see others being promoted but not them. I can sit here and tell you that I ended up as an Advisor not because of my skills, but because I took a vested interest in just making the community a better place. I never had the skill, and never will, to make a server and run it. I could never do Photoshop to create graphics and logos for the community. I was never able to code mods like Doldol for the betterment of JailBreak. I just simply talked to the higher-ups, shared my ideas, and handled drama in a mature way. I can't even begin to tell you how many ideas were shot down, but in the end the ones that actually made sense, helped create the community into what it is today. That goes for all the higher-ups that have come and gone.
The promotion system might seem flawed, but it's not. It just depends on what side you're looking from. Everyone has the ability to get promoted.
Also, whoever mentioned the medals and awards on our profiles, I've always thought that was a great idea. Problem was, no one was able to help, albeit I don't think we conveyed the message that well. If someone wants to make that stuff in photoshop and create a library of awards, I don't think anyone will complain. I would probably make a few prototypes first and share with the higher-ups for approval.
Just my two cents on everything....
Edit: I'm also 99% sure I wrote that promotion guideline lol
