Nothing is wrong and there's no implication. It was a word used when black people were enslaved by your ancestors. Surely you can understand why white people shouldn't use it.
If its a word that truly causes them to feel offended then they wouldn't use it themselves, and changing the ER to an A wouldn't entirely change its meaning. It was your ancestors too might I add.
