you don't really need an i7 at all if you primarily intend to use the PC for gaming purposes. If going for a budget build, going for an i5 instead of an i7 is a great way to save money, allowing for upgrades in more important areas.

fairly common thing to do is get a decently sized SSD (240GB) and use that for windows, as well as games that are heavy on loading (such as Diablo for example, WoW depending on the content you do), while getting an HDD (say, 1TB) to use for general storage, which will include stuff such as pictures, videos, general documents, games that don't require fast loading times (such as CS, LoL, etc.)
