Well since this seems to be the most controversial topic on here and also everywhere else I figured I would do my best to write a review based on what I have played so far.
So as I turned on the game and start my first multiplayer match I was greeted with a familiar scene on the sandy planet of Tatooine. I was part of the rebel alliance tasked with stopping the Empire from taking over 2 control points, one being a cantina and the other a spaceport. I started out heading to one of the control points and got blindsided by a Stormtrooper. This was one of the many deaths I had on my first playthrough.
The second installment of the Battlefront games takes place now over all 3 eras of the Star Wars universe; the clone wars, the empire/rebellion, and the new age with the First Order. Battlefront takes pride in trying to recreate most of the most iconic places from all 3 eras and does a pretty fantastic job on this. The visuals are stunning, the sounds of blasters and troopers yelling orders are on point, and weapon designs and character designs are flat out gorgeous.
This time around a longer and more story driven campaign was brought into the fold. The story follows special forces Imperial officer Iden Versio as she has to deal with serving a Empire that is turning into a declining fascist state. Versio is a compelling character who is an interesting addition to try to bridge the timeline between Episodes 6 and 7. The story which is very predictable has some high points but also turns into a mess because the story goes away from Iden and insteads turns to iconic characters like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo in single missions that kinda break the action and story you are building with Iden.
The multiplayer which is obviously the main focus has been the center of controversy this past couple of weeks. The multiplayer have a couple different modes; conquest is the standard mode featuring the most players, a hero vs. villains mode where each team plays at the hero's and villains from each side and a certain target is marked from each side and you have to find and kill that person to score, a star fighter mode where it's entirely ship vs ship battles, and a few other smaller modes. EA has taken a ton of heat for the way it's treating loot boxes in the game. Before the game was released EA decided to take away the option to pay real money to unlock loot boxes which would have gave a edge to players that would want to spend more money. This was a step in the right direction at least for now. The reward structure is really bad in my opinion. The leveling system that unlocks new guns, new hero's, and other abilities is not as bad as the internet would have you believe but it is really boring. It's not the fact that the unlocks are hidden behind pay walls or such values you can't unlock them but instead unlocks have certain requirements that make it extremely hard to play all the different classes in multiplayer but instead have you focus playing a certain class just unlock that next gun. I have honestly had zero problems with the loot boxes. I earn enough credits in multiplayer to buy them at a steady pace and I don't ever see myself feeling like I will need to pay real money to catch up with everyone else.
In closing I've had a ton of fun with the game. I wish the main story was a little better and that unlocking items in multiplayer was a little easier but overall I have really enjoyed the game. It's gorgeous, the gunplay is fun, and it reminds me of the Star Wars universe and that is the biggest point I believe.
