These are the shoes I have right now for running, I think I like them. But when you go from Wal-Mart shoes to these it's hard not to. I usually use a cutoff shirt or a muscle shirt when I run. I bought some underarmour running shorts, but didn't realize I should've gotten a smaller size since I've lost weight. I also have an armband for my phone and some basic samsung ear buds that came with it.

Short-term Goal: Run 5k, no stops/walks. I might be able to do that now if I pace myself better but I don't want to lose a lot of time. Today I had a 7:44, 10:23, 10:48 pace then sprinted the last ~.15

From my experience those shoes don't give the full effect to use them for running. As regular shoes they are fine but for running you need shoes which support you with every step. Those shoes also don't provide the best support for ur ancles which is sidely inportant.

For a shirt it doesn't really depend much, only thing i would recommend is a shirt which breaths alot and takes on swet alot better. For running shorts i think thats fine but i never really use them. If the shorts are bigger then you're regular fit they can actually be a wall for you since you can't use the maximum of they're ability and they will only slow you down since you won't be able to use the movement to it's fullest which they are designed for.

The armband always comes in handy. I never use one but its fine, ear buds i only use the ones which actually you can attach very good to the ear. Since i had one's which were falling out every one in a while and i was being annoyed by.

A 5K run with no stops and walks should be do-able. Mostly what people don't know is you actually have alot more enerygy then the body thinks (mind also). If you feel very tired at about 3-4k you mostly can keep on going to 3.5-4.5 when you put yourself to it.

Also rightnow you're focussing on time. I wouldn't recommend that. Just take ur time and build up. When you can walk a 5K you can start trying to improve you're running time which would make it alot easier. If you wanna do it with a fast time it will take you only longer because it takes a while for you to actually achieve the time you have in mind. I usually just try to walk my wanted K's and worry about the time part later. It really helps alot and improves me more then with the time in mind.

I'll look into some asics sometime. I find myself having to fix the shorts while I'm running every now and then. The arm band is nice because if I kept it anywhere else it just bothers me bouncing around. I'm not so much worried on time just I want to finish running the 5k without needing to walk. Just gotta pace myself better on the longer runs.

I'll probably bump this thread with progress just because. Otherwise I use this MapMyRun app that logs all my runs with the routes, times, splits, etc.
