It's funny you should say that because many speedrunners make a point of doing glitchless speedruns. But without glitches, the Sonic & Pokemon runs wouldn't be nearly as popular as they are. If anybody just happens to have an hour to kill, go check out Werster running those games. I think he holds the world record for all three Sonic games.

Here's an explanation video that was only posted last month. You can see that they are getting faster still to this date, almost shaving off 30 seconds since then.
It works off the principal of putting bytes into the ROM's memory. When you see Seth lining up the shells on Yoshi, it has to be pixel perfect on the X axis. This injects the right bytes into the right locations of memory. So when he takes damage at the end from his own shell, at those precise coordinates, the game see that all the other memory exists and plays the Credits.
So he's finishing the game, without having to fight Bowser or collect the princess.
It's really cool IMO.
