Self-driving cars programmed to decide who dies in a crash

This is a very important question.

Should the self-driving car protect the driver at all costs or should sacrifice the driver in order to save others.

This is similar to the Trolley problem in which a trolley is going down a track and 5 people are tied to the track, but you can divert the trolley down another track and only kill one person.

Quote:
Christoph von Hugo said that the carmaker’s future autonomous cars will save the car’s driver and passengers, even if that means sacrificing the lives of pedestrians, in a situation where those are the only two options.

Christoph von Hugo caught a lot of hate for this statement. He later said that this was just his answer to the "Trolley problem."

This issue today even remains unaddressed through legislation and there are no regulations about it.

I for one will not buy a self-driving car that willingly sacrifices the driver.

What do you think about this?

I think it's a really interesting idea, I've though about this myself a lot.

Take the trolly problem for example, and think about what an AI would say. I would assume that an AI would choose saving five people rather than one since the only factor it considers is the amount of lives. Transfer the same situation to an AI the drives a car. Would it be programmed to protect the people inside no matter the cost, or would it be programmed to protect the largest amount of people similar to its solution to the trolly problem. Really scary to think that people are attempting to design AI with the sole purpose of weighing human life.

That kind of technology is so untested that I wouldn't trust it period. What happens if terrorists hack into these things and use them in attacks?

The duality between AI's and organic life will always persist. It is up to us to find the middle ground where both can persist. And it all starts with trusting our technology, and one day, our technology will have to trust us. BUT, I personally will always stick to cars that aren't self driving because driving is SUPER FUN.

Why would we have to trust technology if we are the ones creating it? That's a presupposition directly against creating AI in the first place, suggesting that it obviously can't function on human morals.

If the car is self driving, the driver technically wouldnt be at fault, so why should he be sacraficed?

The way I see it is the company that makes the cars has a responsibility to keep THEIR customers safe.
