What headset do you have?

Turtle Beach Z22

Headsets, especially those with built in amplifiers, are notorious for causing all sorts of hardware issues due to shorts, degradation, etc.

Do you have the latest driver for your headset? I would double check that, but if the drivers are up to date I would start reading the fine print of the manufacturer's warranty.

The drivers for the Z22 come with the headset, and Turtle Beach says that it installs the generic drivers and there no need for other drivers. So Turtle Beach does not have drivers for this. I will be getting a SteelSeries wireless headset shortly so soon this will no longer be a problem.

I'd still look into getting a replacement set. Then you can sell it and mitigate some of the cost of the new set.

Okay, so I've done more research and others have had the same problem too. What they say causes it is that two different sound devices are being used at once and the computer confuses itself leading to a system freeze/hang + sound going out/earrape. So just now I deactivated one of the HD audio outputs and I'm going to test it tomorrow. I have it set to Discord/Teamspeak goes through Turtle Beach Z22 Chat, and everything else goes through a digital sound output.

Update: I set the Turtle Beach Z22 Chat output to Default Communication Device and Speakers (High Definition Audio) to Default Device and haven't had any problems.
