I'm not sure how much coverage this has gotten in the U.S. but the story of these 12 Thai boys and their coach that have gotten stranded in a cave has gained some significant traction in the media over here. It reminds of the Chilean Miners and what a wonderful story that turned out to be when all was said and done.

The team went into Tham Luang Nang Non to explore after a football game before heavy rain hit the area and the cave became flooded. The Monsoon season had been expected but it reportedly arrived earlier than expected. They retreated further down the cave system, getting stranded as the routes became flooded and they were reported missing - but were found alive and well ten days later by British divers.

The Thai government have been pumping water out of the cave whilst divers have been descending to drop off supplies whilst they figure out a way to extract the boys. Unfortunately, on July 5th, a former Thai Navy SEAL died on the return journey after dropping off oxygen supplies.

Today they started the rescue operation and so far so good! They've managed to pull four of the young boys out but the journey is said to be a long and difficult one so it's not expected that the rescue operation will be complete for some time yet.

Here's the full Wikipedia article for more information.

Here's hoping that everybody involved emerges safe and sound!

Absolutely crazy the scope of this rescue operation, and how successful they've been already. Hope they all get out alive. One rescuer already died when he ran out of oxygen.

What blows my mind even more is why the hell did this coach think it was a good idea to go cave exploring with what looks like no gear, no food, no clothes they are wearing fucking jerseys still. Darwin award goes to this guy. What an idiot.

This is a pretty cool story!

The effort put in to save those kids is really astonishing.
