Valve has announced future Counter-Strike: Global Offensive majors will have a prize pool of $1 million, and explained growth in the game's community and esports presence was a key factor in its decision to invest more money into competitive play.

"When we announced the first CS:GO Major Championship in 2013, we hoped the Majors would be rallying points for the community, tent-pole events that could draw new audiences and amplify the value of all events," the company said on the Counter-Strike blog.

"Since then, the professional CS:GO community has been growing at an incredible rate," it continued. "CS:GO tournaments are now among the largest esports events in the world, drawing global audiences of millions of viewers, filling massive venues, and garnering higher prize pools. Professional CS:GO has grown, and the CS:GO Major Championships are about to grow with it."

The first tournament to benefit from the increased prize pool is MLG Columbus, which will be held at the MLG Arena and Nationwide Arena from March 29 until April 3. Adam Apicella, senior executive at MLG, posted a breakdown of the $1 million will be split.

MLG Columbus CSGO Breakdown

Winner $500,000
Finalist $150,000
Semi-Finalist $70,000
Quarter Finalist $35,000
Group Stage $8,750

SPLYCE have qualified. I've never even heard of them...

Flipsid3 are through, as are G2 (ex-Titan). Gambit have qualified, that's Dosia's new team. Good on them, Dosia was always too good for HellRaisers. CLG are up now against Vexed and C9 are against Renegades later, the winners of those Bo3's qualify for the major.

Could be real interesting if Renegades beat C9...

I'm not sure about Cloud9.
They seem really up and down now.

They won a few game and then just started losing games they are suppose to win.

SPLYCE, i've watched them play agianst lower tier teams, they have done very well actually. They've beat FlipSid3 a few times. They've beaten FaZe when they were on an extreme slump, and some others i don't recall. Now, i don't see them making it past the first round, but hey, don't count them out.

EnVyUs lost BO1's to Astralis, Virtus Pro, Tempo Storm and E-Frag today at IEM Katowice and finished last in their six team group. Major tilt just weeks before they defend their major championship.

Wtf....
Lol I love Envyus. I saw some of their games, it was horrifying. They make so many mistakes.

Lets hope they get their shit together before the major.

EnVyUs have dropped Kioshima and hired DEVIL from LDLC White. I half-expected Happy to leave.
