Pretty sure that's the point, as he's intended to be more than just the "cute and fluffy" version of Pikachu.

When I first saw this I thought this would be shitty but after watching the trailer I think it’ll end up being pretty cool, I think the main character being the only one able to understand Pikachu is a pretty interesting dynamic and they could do a lot of cool stuff with the concept. I’m not sure how I feel about them having newer pokemon (ex Greninja) but I guess it’s alright as long as they have a lot of older faces.

One thing though is this trailer strangely reminds me of Ted and I also didn’t expect Ryan Reynolds to be Pikachu, but watching the trailer I think it will be a good movie.

i love the trailer, saw it before today and i think they chose the perfect dude for pikachu. its a great combo of the voice and body

For sure, got mixed feelings towards it not for the fact that it'll "ruin pokemon" but curious to see how the story will play out.

Seems a lot of mass media companies have been throwing out a lot of live action remake announcements lately with Mulan, Lion King, and Aladdin with already Beauty & The Beast and Jungle Book. But then again, that's mostly Disney.
